AzCPG Annual Meeting

We do not have regular meetings since our members are spread out across the state of Arizona as well as some members in Nevada and New Mexico. We communicate with each other on a members-only Yahoo Group website. Once a year we have a face-to-face annual meeting. If you missed this year’s meeting, watch for the announcement about next year’s meeting around May or June. Our annual meetings are free and open to the general public.

Program

Elissa Scalise Powell, CG; CGL

Elissa is a western Pennsylvania researcher; a Trustee for the Board for Certification of Genealogists; an instructor for Boston University's on campus and online Genealogical Research Certificate courses; coordinator for the Professional Genealogy Course at the Samford University's Institute of
Genealogy and Historical Research and an instructor for Salt Lake Institute of
Genealogy. She is co-director of the Genealogical Research Institute of
Pittsburgh (GRIP).

Will give two lectures via Skype:

1:00pm
"Write As You Go"

This lecture encourages the attendees to begin the writing process before they ever look at a research record as a tool for organization and analysis. It outlines general writing principles and how to practically apply them to build a report, along with advice and time-saving tips. Choosing the appropriate report style for the project data and goals and building the report segment by segment is demonstrated.

Summary:
Learn how to be an efficient researcher by using the writing process as a vehicle to drive research and not as a separate activity.

2:00pm
Break

2:15pm
"Using the Genealogical Proof Standard in Everyday Problems:  A Case Study"

This case study illustrates how following the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) to collect records and correlate evidence helps trace a Pennsylvania family's possible movement to Ohio and Indiana. The Colglazier family, said to be of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, is traced through land, probate, census, tax lists, and military records to find if they are indeed the same family who moved west. Four research questions are posed with proposed solutions demonstrating various analysis techniques. The audience is then asked if each solution meets the GPS.

Summary:  Is David of Pennsylvania the same one who settled in Indiana? Did he serve in the Revolutionary War? Come see the research process unfold and if you agree the case is "proven."

3:30pm
